I'm especially interested in finding Usenet news gateways and search engines. Some of the best gopher to news gateways have gone away in recent months, and I'd like to find some good, reliable sites to replace them. If you know of any, send me their names.

DejaNews USENET News Searcher

A great site for searching USENET news posts. They have an archive of posts from just about every halfway-respectable news group going back three months.

DEC Alta Vista News and Web Searcher

You can search for current USENET posts, and also search the Web. It's so good, it even found my homepage! Try searching for yours.

Infoseek

Search the web, USENET groups, or select links to news headlines, reference materials, and other helpful topics.

Finger Gateway

Finger allows you to type in the address of someone on the internet to see if they are currently on-line.

The ANONYMIZER Home Page

This site allows you to surf the web without having your name and e-mail address transmitted over the Internet. Why would you need such a service? Check out their SNOOP page and find out! Also great for people whose Goto a random URL function is disabled!

Reference Pages

I'm always looking for really good reference pages that work consistently and reliably. Stuff like dictionaries, encyclopedias, zip code directories, phone books, quotable quotes, etc. Send your suggestions to me.

Pud's Reference Desk

Contains links to dictionaries, foreign language dictionaries, HTML writing, web surfing, and other reference materials.

U.S. Gazeteer

The Census Bureau's geographic locator. Find just about any place in the U.S.

Geographic Name Server

Some of the old Gopher sites still work! You can enter a zip code or geographical name and get state, county, population, location, elevation, and other information.

Telephone Area Codes from the National Institutes of Health

Search state or area code number. This is a replacement for the old link I had, and includes the newest area codes.

Switchboard

A phone directory, searchable by name, address, and city, for the entire U.S.

WeatherNet

Part of the University of Michigan's Weather Underground service, this site includes WeatherSites, a page of links to hundreds of weather pages and sites.
