The Projects Page
1 - Club Libertel Montreal - This is a project like the other freenets of the world., but being that it is in Quebec, it's in French as well as English. The French word for free-net is Libertel. Have a peek and see at the Libertel home page.
For thosewho don't know what a freenet is, it's rather hard to explain in a short sentence. But, you can go see a page that explains what a community network, a variation of a freenet, is, which should give you a better idea.
For Club Libertel Montreal, we have three principal goals. There are:
a - Show people what the Internet is
b - Create community on the Internet, which is unique to Montreal
c - Help people get access to the Internet
2 - This is a freenet, that I am a member of. I am a member for two reasons. Because I come from the Twin Cities, and because I believe in the freenet/community network movement.
3 - LETS Montreal - this is a small project of a friend of mines' and I. LETS stands for Local Employment Trading System. With the help of a friend of mine, Derek Tattersall, we have a page with various links to information on LETS, and different ways of implementing it. As well, there are links to other alternative currency discussions. Click here.
4 - SHARE - This is a pretty simple idea. You reserve one or more portions of food, and for each portion, you pay $15, and do 2 hours of volunteer work. Each portion of food has double the value of food in it. Because things are bought in bulk, the prices are reduced. Also, the hours of volunteer time are there to help the community help itself. Click here to get the locations of SHARE across the country.
This idea exist, for the moment, in my head only. The main obstacle is that I am really involved in the Libertel project mentionned above. Once this starts to be able to walk on it's own two feet, I'll be able to spend some time getting SHARE up and running.
One of the more difficult problems we face in getting SHARE here in Montreal is that there is no network in Canada, so we'll be starting off from ground zero building our networks and contacts. Ideas are in my head still, it just needs time and a few other interested people to get this idea off the ground
I have a few other projects I'd like to get going, and here's one important one.
a - Interlibrary loan at public libraries - This doesn't exist in Canada. Though the universities are well set up for this, the public libraries aren't set up at all. In Minnesota, I was able to take advantage of this feature, and I am grateful for it, now I want to get the ball rolling in Canada. I'll start my efforts in Montreal.
This could help the libraries in a few ways.
1 - The libraries could share their resources.
2 - This would leave less expenses on books, and then these resources could be used on other expenses.
3 - Give me other ideas
