Search: Search by Keyword

Google
Makes heavy use of a "link popularity" algorithm, and to advantage, as the most common response of 99.9% of the users of this site is that the first link shown is the one they were after (check the "I'm feeling lucky" search button)
Netscape Search also makes use of Google

Direct Hit
Like "Google," this is a "popularity engine" (which also helps drive Lycos , and the Lycos derivative HotBot , as well as, LookSmart , and MSN Search )

FAST Search
a. k. a. "All The Web," this search engine currently holds the largest index (well over 200 million pages [over 25% of the estimated 800 million pages on the WWW]).  In the past, this honor has rotated between FAST Search, Northern Light , and AltaVista .   The mention of "AltaVista" reminds me that it has a couple of partner sites in Ask Jeeves , and Real Names

DisInformation
Just as "alternative" publications provide a different viewpoint on news stories and current events from that of their "network" cousins, DisInformation aims to put an alternative spin on searching for information by listing sites that might be missed elsewhere.

Excite
Excite is another popular search service on the WWW. It offers a medium-sized index and integrates non-WWW material such as company information and sports scores into its main search page.
WebCrawler as a derivative of Excite is known as "Excite Lite"

Livelink Pinstripe
Formerly "The Open Text Web Index," it has evolved into a new site designated specifically for business users
